CIMF 2020 Virtual Festival
26 APRIL 2020Replica (Garden) - Bree Van Reyk
Listen to festival artist Bree van Reyk discuss her piece Replica (Garden).
Replica (Garden) was commissioned by A Major Lift and the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Replica (Garden) was going to be performed at the Australian National Botanic Gardens to celebrate the gardens’ 50th anniversary and the new Banksia Garden. The piece was to be performed by members of Ensemble Offspring and the ANU School of Music.
Bree van Reyk is a drummer, percussionist, composer and sound artist who makes unconventional and tradition-challenging performance works. Her music resides in the intersection between contemporary classical, indie-rock and performance art and is equally warm-hearted, celebratory, and focussed on issues of equality.
26 APRIL 2020Fern (2013) Composed By Kate Moore
Ensemble Offspring is Australia’s foremost contemporary music group and most recent recipient of the Sidney Myer Award. The members of the group are frequent and welcome guests at the Canberra International Music Festival. Whilst we are unable to watch the sunset from the aMBUSH Gallery and hear their exquisite Birdsong at Dusk we offer the ensemble’s version of Fern by Kate Moore in a video realisation by Lillian Brown.
A fern is an enchanting plant, ancient and universal. Its fronds overlap with intricate self-similar patterns, expanding and contracting. With a lineage reaching to the dawn of time, ferns inhabit the forest floor. Here it is dark, cool, rich and fertile, a place in which to hide one’s treasures and one’s secrets. Here is nature’s cloak of invisibility. The skeletal structure of the plant is articulated by instrumental and sampled sounds that resemble insects that take shelter beneath its organic layers.

26 APRIL 2020Chamber Made And Kate Neal
Melbourne based Chamber Made has created new chamber opera since 1988 and has never made it to Canberra. Permission to Speak was going to change that and bring together Canberra International Music Festival in collaboration with the Kambri cultural precinct. The work was a fitting curtain raiser to the 2020 festival with its pure poignant a capella score by Kate Neal (CIMF’s 2020 composer-in-residence) and beautifully pared back staging by Tamara Saulwick.
The piece fuses four performer vocalists with an assembly of pre-recorded voices, offering multiple perspectives on the contemporary experience of family.
Watch on for a glimpse of this moving production featuring Gian Slater, Georgie Darvidis, Josh Kyle and Edward Fairlie.
